FREE CANCER AND EYE DETECTION CAMP

In a significant step toward promoting public health and early disease detection, K.T.N College of Pharmacy organized a free cancer screening camp in collaboration with the State Health Department. The event was conducted under the theme “Aarogyam Anandam; Akattaam Arbudham”, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and preventive healthcare. The initiative was jointly coordinated with Chalavara Grama Panchayat, the Family Health Centre, Lions Club Renaissance Cherpulassery, and Ottapalam Welfare Trust, reflecting a strong commitment to community health and wellness.

The camp was held within the K.T.N College of Pharmacy campus and witnessed enthusiastic participation from healthcare professionals, faculty members, students, and local residents. The program was officially inaugurated by Chalavara Grama Panchayat
President, Mr. E. Chandrababu, who commended the organizers for their efforts in raising awareness about cancer prevention and the importance of regular health check-ups. The event was presided over by Dr. K.S.G. Arulkumaran, Principal of K.T.N College of Pharmacy, who emphasized the role of pharmacists and healthcare professionals in preventive medicine. Special addresses were delivered by Mr. P.P. Prem Krishnan, Trustee of K.T.N Education & Welfare Trust, Mr. Anil Kumar P K, Health Standing Committee Member, and Mr. Jayachandran C G, President of Lions Club Renaissance Cherpulassery, highlighting the rising burden of non-communicable diseases and the importance of community-driven health awareness programs.

The free cancer screening camp saw an overwhelming 100 participants response, with a total of 65 individuals registering for various health assessments and screenings. 45 participants underwent cancer screening, including clinical evaluations and risk assessments.

Additionally, all registered participants had their Body Mass Index (BMI), blood glucose levels, and blood pressure (BP) monitored as part of a general health assessment. These tests aimed to identify potential risk factors for chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, which are linked to an increased risk of cancer and other lifestyle diseases.Additionally, all registered participants had their Body Mass Index (BMI), blood glucose levels, and blood pressure (BP) monitored as part of a general health assessment. These tests aimed to identify potential risk factors for chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, which are linked to an increased risk of cancer and other lifestyle diseases.

Health Inspector, Mr. Nassar M K from Chalavara led an informative session on early cancer detection, symptoms to watch for, and lifestyle modifications for reducing cancer risk. He emphasized the need for regular medical screenings and healthy habits, as early
diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes. The screening and medical consultations were conducted under the supervision of healthcare professionals from the Early Cancer Detection Centre (ECDC), Kanjikode, who provided comprehensive health
evaluations and necessary referrals for further medical intervention.

The event was actively supported by the Department of Pharmacy Practice, with Dr. S Rajarajan, Head of the Department, expressing his gratitude to all stakeholders and volunteers for their contributions to the event’s success. Faculty members, including Mr. Anoop T.V, Mrs. Anjali Sruthy. S, Mrs. Anuradha V.P, Dr. Aparna K.S, Dr. Nisha Joy,
and Mrs. Athira K. Das, played a crucial role in organizing the camp and assisting participants.

PharmD students took an active role in community education by preparing an awareness video on important cancer-related topics, including Pap smear, cervical cancer, breast cancer, mammography, FNAC, oral cancer, and prostate cancer. The video was showcased during the event to educate participants about early detection methods, risk factors, and preventive measures.

In addition to the cancer screening camp, a free eye check-up camp was also organized on the same day at K.T.N College of Pharmacy, in association with Thottakkara Ottapalam Eye Care Hospital. The initiative aimed to promote vision health and early detection of
eye-related issues. A total of 25 individuals underwent omprehensive eye examinations, including vision tests, eye pressure screening, and consultations with ophthalmologists. Specialists provided personalized recommendations for further treatment where necessary, reinforcing the importance of regular eye check-ups, particularly for individuals with diabetes or hypertension.

The successful execution of these healthcare initiatives underscores K.T.N College of Pharmacy’s commitment to public health, preventive care, and social responsibility. By collaborating with various healthcare organizations and professionals, the institution
continues to make a meaningful impact through medical camps, awareness programs, and free health services for the community. Moving forward, the college aims to expand its outreach efforts by organizing similar initiatives, ensuring that quality healthcare services and health education reach those in need.
