Introduction
In observance of World No Tobacco Day, the NSS Unit of K.T.N. College of Pharmacy organized a Public Awareness Program on 05 June 2026 in association with the Family Health Centre, Adakkaputhur/Vellinezhi and Vellinezhi Grama Panchayath. The program was conducted with the objective of educating the public, particularly young people, about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and motivating them to adopt healthy and tobacco-free lifestyles.
Inaugural Function
The program commenced with an inaugural meeting attended by representatives from the health department, local self-government institutions, educational institutions, NSS volunteers, students, and members of the public.
The meeting was inaugurated by the Mr. A suresh Kumar, President of Vellinezhi Grama Panchayath, who emphasized the need for collective community action to prevent tobacco use and promote public health. The inaugural session was followed by awareness talks delivered by Dr. Soumya, Medical Officer, and Mr. Praveen, Health Inspector.
Dr. Soumya highlighted the serious health consequences of tobacco use, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders, and the harmful effects of second-hand smoke. Mr. Praveen discussed the social and economic burden caused by tobacco addiction and encouraged students and community members to become advocates for a tobacco-free society.
Awareness Rally
An awareness rally was organized through important public areas of Vellinezhi. NSS volunteers of K.T.N. College of Pharmacy actively participated in the rally carrying banners, placards, and anti-tobacco slogans. The rally effectively conveyed messages regarding the dangers of tobacco use and the importance of healthy lifestyle choices to the general public.
Flash Mob and Mime Presentations
The highlight of the program was a series of flash mob and mime performances presented by the NSS volunteers of K.T.N. College of Pharmacy. Through creative and engaging performances, the students portrayed the devastating effects of tobacco addiction on individuals, families, and society.
The program also witnessed active participation from Vellinezhi Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) and Sabari PTB Higher Secondary School (HSS). Students from these institutions presented flash mobs and mime performances based on the theme of World No Tobacco Day. Their performances effectively communicated anti-tobacco messages and inspired the audience to adopt healthy habits.
Public Response
The awareness activities attracted considerable public attention and appreciation. The rally, flash mobs, and mime presentations successfully engaged people of different age groups and enhanced awareness regarding the harmful effects of tobacco consumption. The program encouraged meaningful interaction among students, health professionals, local authorities, and community members.
Conclusion
The World No Tobacco Day Public Awareness Program conducted on 05 June 2026 was highly successful in spreading awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and promoting positive lifestyle choices. The collaborative efforts of K.T.N. College of Pharmacy, Family Health Centre Adakkaputhur/Vellinezhi, Vellinezhi Grama Panchayath, Vellinezhi GHSS, and Sabari PTB HSS contributed significantly to the success of the event. The program reinforced the importance of community participation in creating a healthier, tobacco-free society.
